Girl Scout Day 2025
September 20, 2025 (Sat) 10am-4pm
Girl Scout Badge Day will run from 10 am to 4 pm for self-guided activities and workshops. All museum activities are open to the Girl Scouts and their families and are included with the museum admission (except workshops). This year, thanks to the Frank K. Webb Charitable Trust, the first 200 Girl Scouts and Troop Leaders receive FREE ADMISSION!
Workshops
Daisy Workshop: Amazing Algorithms: 10:30 am to 11:00 am; Badge: How Robots Move
Students will learn that robots move as a result of programming and that programming can be broken down into step by step directions called algorithms. Students will practice writing algorithms and will be introduced to the concept of using loops in programming.
Brownie Workshop: Just a Little Bit!: 11:30 am to 12:15 pm; Badge: Programming Robots
Students will explore the relationship between inputs, outputs, hardware, and software by interacting with a pocket-sized computer called the micro:Bit. Using Microsoft MakeCode, they will learn foundational programming concepts and create custom programs to control the Micro:Bit’s features.
Junior Workshop: Micro:bit Mayhem: 12:45 pm to 1:30 pm; Badge: Programming Robots
Students learn about the different parts of the BBC micro:bit including the LED’s, buttons, sensors, and input/output pins. Using the MakeCode editor, students will develop programming skills, including writing, testing, and debugging basic programs that incorporate concepts like variables, loops, and conditionals.
Cadettes Workshop: Micro:bit Mayhem: 2 pm to 3 pm; Badge: Programming Robots
Students learn about the different parts of the BBC micro:bit including the LED’s, buttons, sensors, and input/output pins. Using the MakeCode editor, students will develop programming skills, including writing, testing, and debugging basic programs that incorporate concepts like variables, loops, and conditionals.
Each workshop is $5. Member discount does not apply.
ALL-DAY Activities (comes with admission)
Daisy Activity: Model Car Design Badge
Students will learn about force and friction and how they affect the motion of an object. For example, they will see how gravity pulls objects down, and how friction slows objects down by testing a variety of ramps and adjusting the ramp heights to observe how friction will affect the motion of the cars. Students will have the opportunity to explore the concepts of force and friction in a hands-on way. They will be able to see how different forces affect the motion of objects and apply their knowledge to answer a few inquiry questions.
Brownie Activity: Naturalist - Bugs
Students will learn about bugs and their homes by completing various activities. They will create a bug poster to show what they have learned. They will also create bugs using craft materials, such as pipe cleaners, egg cartons, paper plates, and googly eyes. They will then create a bug home for bugs to live in. Finally, they will observe bugs in their natural habitat to learn more about them.
Junior Activity: Balloon Car Design Badge
Students will use their knowledge of potential and kinetic energy to create a balloon car design that travels the fastest and furthest. They will complete five different activities, ending with designing, creating, and making improvements on their balloon car. They will race against other cars and compare their results to those of the other students. Students will learn a lot about potential and kinetic energy through this activity. They will also learn about design, engineering, and problem-solving.
Cadette Activity: Special Agent Badge
Students will learn about forensic science and criminal psychology and how experts use these fields to solve crimes. For example, they will explore techniques used by detectives, scientists, psychologists, and law enforcement by participating in hands-on activities that simulate real investigations. Students will have the opportunity to engage with forensic tools and methods in a practical way. They will be able to see how different investigative techniques are applied to analyze evidence and criminal behavior, and apply their knowledge to answer a few inquiry questions.
