Endangered, extinct, and everything in between! Step into Wild at Risk this November. Wild animals face big challenges, and their survival depends on amazing adaptations and sometimes a little help from us. Explore extinct and endangered species and discover how they learned to survive in their environments. See the past, meet the present, and find out how you can help shape the future of wildlife!
Wild at Risk Activities Nov 24-30
Beaks and Eats
Discover how birds’ beaks are specially shaped for the foods they eat. Try out different “beaks” at our food stations to see which works best for each type of food. Along the way, explore how these adaptations help birds survive and learn how humans have borrowed these ideas through biomimicry to create new tools and technology.
Wildlife on the Line
Get ready to explore the science of survival! In this interactive activity, guests will spin the wheel to reveal their animal and become wildlife conservation scientists. They’ll investigate population trends and use scaled numbers to graph how each species has changed over time. By comparing animals that were saved with those that went extinct, guests will discover how human actions can help protect wildlife today.
Fur Real: Animal ID Extinct & Endangered
Step into the shoes of a wildlife detective! This month, explore the fur of animals that are endangered or extinct. Become a Wildlife Forensic Specialist and examine real fur samples under the microscope to uncover clues about each animal. Look closely at the structure, thickness, color, and texture of each hair. Can you figure out which animal each sample came from and help give these at-risk species a voice?
Wild Impressions Workshop Nov 22 & 29
Learn about the physical and chemical changes that occur when making a cast, including how materials change state, harden, and set. Using painting techniques, students will develop artistic skills, including mixing colors, applying layers, and adding detail to their pre-made cast to create a finished piece that reflects both scientific understanding and personal expression. At the end of the workshop, guests will take home their very own painted model as a keepsake of their work and creativity.
