The Sound of Silos

Do you have a fascination with fluctuation or an obsession with oscillation, perhaps a peculiar rhythm of reverberation that you just can’t shake? Ever have those sweet sensations from good vibrations or notice how sound just streams through your ears all day and wonder how does that sound get to you?  In this episode of the Explorer Zone we discover unique ways to make the invisible visible by exploring the physics of sound. Come join us as we discover the magical acoustical anomalies of the Sound of Silos.

Since we can’t really see sound waves, let’s try to make these vibrations visible by doing some sound work in the learning lab.

> Writing Prompt

Create a sound map! Sit in one spot and close your eyes.  Listen to all the sounds you hear and estimate the distance they are from you.  Then, write a story about what you heard and how it traveled across the air into your ears!

Games from Legends of Learning

In this game, you will use sonar to track marine animals and map treacherous ocean terrain. Between facts about sound waves, you'll encounter whales and dolphins who can help you move on to a quiz section. Show off your wave knowledge and earn bonus points for upgrading your submarine. Be careful, there is dangerous debris in the ocean that can damage your sub!

Make sound waves with a speaker, and hear the tone it produces. Adjust the frequency and amplitude, and observe the changes in the wave. Design experiments to measure wavelength and wave speed. Note: Students will automatically move through this simulation after 10 minutes of playtime.
