Axolotls do not develop adult characteristics but retain their gills, fins and other larval characteristics throughout their life. They live permanently in water, in the wetlands and canals associated with Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco, adjacent to Mexico City.
They exhibit a trait called neoteny. This means that they retain their juvenile characteristics such as their gills, tails, and fins into adulthood.
The Axolotl can regenerate its limbs and organs perfectly, without any scarring. They can do this as many times as necessary in as little as three weeks!
